Five things to check before grocery shopping in Northern Ireland
A short checklist to avoid wasted trips, misleading offers and expensive basket surprises.
1. Check the repeat buys first
Before looking at the exciting offers, check the products that actually come back every week: milk, bread, eggs, mince, chicken, fruit, vegetables, pasta, rice, washing capsules and toilet roll. These boring products decide the real basket cost more often than one big discount.
2. Compare the useful unit
Use price per kg for meat, fish and vegetables, price per litre for liquids, price per wash for laundry capsules and price per bag for bin liners. A lower shelf price can still be worse value if the pack is smaller or the unit price is higher.
3. Look for fresh versus frozen
Fresh may be right for tonight's dinner. Frozen may be better for reducing waste and avoiding top-up trips. A frozen vegetable or fish option can make sense when the household needs flexibility.
4. Decide if the trip is worth it
A saving is not only money on the receipt. If the offer means an extra journey, extra fuel or another hour of shopping, it may not be worth it. This matters especially outside larger towns where supermarket choice is more spread out.
5. Verify before buying
NI Food Compass helps with planning, but retailers remain the final source for stock, delivery and current price. Use the retailer link before relying on an offer for a meal plan.
Use the live comparison
